Agriculture is the main source of income in rural Pakistan, with the majority of rural households dependent on farming for their livelihood. However, traditional inputs and outdated techniques have historically resulted in low crop yields. Poor access to finance, combined with limited awareness of modern practices, remains a fundamental barrier preventing farmers from achieving economic prosperity.

Most rural farming households earn barely enough to cover basic health and education expenses, leaving little to no savings to invest in the next crop cycle. As a result, the majority turn to informal money lenders as their only source of agricultural financing. Exorbitant interest rates trap small-holding farmers in a vicious cycle of debt; repayment of usurious loans consumes a significant share of their income over time, deepening chronic poverty across rural Pakistan.

To address this, OSDI's Agriculture Development Project (ADP) provides affordable and sustained financial assistance to farmers in its focused villages, in the form of essential farming inputs such as seed, fertilizer, equipment, soil nutrients, and pesticides. Beneficiaries also receive periodic training from OSDI's appointed agricultural experts on modern farming techniques and best practices.

The goal is to increase agricultural output higher yield per acre, leading directly to increased household income. Over a few financed crop cycles, farmers begin to build savings, stabilize their income, and gain the opportunity to break free from the intergenerational cycle of poverty.

To date, ADP has financed 2192 farmers cultivating a total of 7239.95 acres of farmland, across the focused districts of Shikarpur, Khairpur, Matiari, Jacobabad, and Thatta (Sindh), Lasbela (Balochistan), and Mardan (KPK).
